The Ekpapalek Project: finding oportunities for Latin American students abroad

The lack of resources (money and connections) to pursue dreams is one of the main obstacles that Latin American students have for progressing academically. Often, the desired course or internship abroad is inaccessible and turns into an unreachable dream because they do not have the means to support theirselves abroad. With this, opportunities for academic development are once again impeded.

I’ve been thinking about finding a solution to that problem and I thought that the my blog could go beyond just writing about tips and recommendations to seek opportunities abroad. Hence, today I decided to launch the Ekpapalek project which seeks to promote opportunities for Latin American students with low-income to do professional internships abroad.I appeal to all people around the world and ask you to consider the initiative that I propose to you today. Would you be keen to contribute to the development of Latin American students, by hosting them at your home while they do a short internship in your city?.

For example, there are many couples who live in a house with empty rooms because their children have moved out…. then could it be that you would offer your time and space to host a Latin American student for a short while (1 to 3 months maximum) as they do internships at a university nearby? Another scenario: you and your friends are yourselves studying abroad, and know how beneficial it is to gain knowledge in another environment… would you be encouraged to offer up your couch for a month or two to a Latin American who also want to have that opportunity?

If at a citizen level we become aware and realize that we can individually promote change, we could achieve many things. By supporting university students we would increase the chances of improving their home countries through the promotion of science and technology. In this case, you would encourage and  support Latin American students to have the opportunity to learn in other countries and then to return to their respective countries full of ideas, collaborations and projects.

Imagine if each of us can help Latin American university students to become agents of change! Imagine that a Peruvian goes to Uruguay or that a Uruguayan goes to Finland or that a Guatemalan goes to Portugal while a Honduran goes to Australia. Your help will stimulate the creation of new and more fruitful partnerships between universities in Latin American and your own country.  Don’t you think we could help empower Latin America if instead of waiting for countries to make agreements we help ourselves and streamline the process by contributing our bit  What we all have to ask ourselves is:

 …..If not now, when? If not me, …. Who?

In short, the project aims to extend the hand of friendship and support to Latin American students through three different ways:

You can offer your home (your sofa, a room, a space in your home)
You can offer to share lunch, breakfast or dinner
You can make a mix of the two previously mentioned

What are the benefits of being a host?

– You can meet new people coming from a different country and culture!
– You will have the opportunity to learn how science is done in another country, you will generate academic connections between your own country and Latin America.
– You contribute to the progress of a Latin American country and to the general progress of science and technology in the developing world.

– You will destroy social barriers that prevent students with few resources of having the opportunity to internationalize and develop academically.

– Personal satisfaction of knowing that YOU are also an agent of change and progress.

From today until the end of December I’ll be compiling and making a database of people in different countries who share this idea and want to be part of the project (contact me if you want to be a host or contribute in some other way). Depending on how many people are keen to contribute, we could start with the first round of exchanges by July 2016.

This is just the beginning and I am more than happy to receive suggestions and comments (please send to my mail: clarissajaz@gmail.com).I would like that every awardee complements its internship with a course in gender equity and leadership as part of the exchange so I am keen to partner with other organizations that would like to give these lessons to each awardee.

The second part of this project, seeks for mentors that are keen to donate 1 hour of their time to have a 1 hour skype meeting with a Latin student. It will be a great experience and a boost for your CV. If interested please contact me.

The third part of the project will be recruiting different women that share their experiences at work with young girls and boys at public schools in different Latin countries. If you are ready to spend 15 minutes empowering Latins please let me know

Ekpapalek is a word from an indigenous language in the jungle of Peru known as Shiwilu. It means to help a person walking . This verb is used to describe the way in which children are helped to walked when they start learning on how to do it, so you must move slowly helping him or her. Many of us have learned to walk in that way but in Shiwilu language we have a word that describes this action.

El projecto Ekpapalek: desarrollo profesional en el extranjero para Latinoamericanos

Uno de los obstáculos que tenemos los latinoamericanos es la falta de recursos (dinero) para perseguir nuestros sueños. Muchas veces estamos atados de manos ……..y entonces es ahí donde aquella pasantía o aquel curso en el extranjero o las añoradas prácticas profesionales….. se vuelven inalcanzables.

He estado pensando en buscar una solución a esa necesidad y he pensado que el blog podría dar un paso mas allá de solo escribir acerca de tips y recomendaciones para buscar oportunidades en el extranjero. Es por eso que hoy decidí lanzar el projecto Ekpapalek que busca promover que más estudiantes latinoamericanos con pocos recursos tengan la oportunidad de hacer prácticas profesionales en el extranjero.

Hago un llamado a todos los latinoamericanos en todas las partes del mundo y les pido que consideren la iniciativa que les voy a proponer, porque si hay algo en los que somos muy buenos es en ser solidarios y apoyarnos siempre. Por ejemplo, hay muchas parejas que viven en una casa con cuartos vacíos porque sus hijos ya crecieron y se fueron de la casa….entonces, podría ser que ustedes podrían donar su espacio y tiempo para acoger a un estudiante latinoamericano para que por un tiempo corto (de 1 a 3 meses máximo) haga sus practicas profesionales en la universidad de tu ciudad?. Otro escenario: tú y tus amigos que ahora estudian en el extranjero saben cuan beneficioso es hacer tus practicas y adquirir conocimientos en otro ambiente , te animarías a prestar tu sofá por un mes o dos a un latinoamericano que también quiere tener esa oportunidad?.

Si a nivel ciudadano nos concientizamos y nos damos cuenta que nosotros a nivel individual podemos promover el cambio podríamos lograr muchas cosas. Apoyando a nuestros estudiantes incrementaríamos las oportunidades de sacar adelante a nuestros países por medio de la promoción de la ciencia y tecnología. En este caso, apoyaríamos a que estudiantes de ciencias tengan la oportunidad de aprender en otros países y luego puedan volver a sus respectivos países llenos de ideas, colaboraciones y proyectos.

Imagina si cada uno de los estudiantes que ayudemos se convierta en un agente de cambio!. Imagina que un Peruano se vaya a Uruguay o que un Uruguayo se vaya a Finlandia o que un Hondureño se vaya a Colombia y que el Guatemalteco se vaya a Australia. No crees que tu ayuda impulsaría a crear mas colaboraciones entre universidades latinoamericanas o con otros países fuera de América? No crees que podríamos ayudar a potenciar a América latina si en vez de esperar a que los países hagan acuerdos nosotros nos ponemos las pilas y agilizamos el proceso contribuyendo con nuestro granito de arena?. Lo que nos tenemos que preguntar todos es:

…..Si no es ahora, Cuándo? sino eres tú…. Quién?

En resumidas cuentas, el proyecto busca extender la mano amiga y apoyar a un estudiante latinoamericano por medio de tres diferentes vías:

1. Puedes ofrecer tu casa (tu sofá, un cuarto, un espacio en tu casa)
2. Puedes ofrecer compartir el almuerzo, desayuno o cena
3. Puedes hacer un mix de los dos previamente mencionados

Cuáles son los beneficios de ser un anfitrión?

1. Podrás conocer gente nueva que viene de un país y cultura diferente!
2. Tendrás la oportunidad de conocer como se hace ciencia en otro país, generarás conexiones académicas.
3. Contribuyes con el progreso de tu país y del país del estudiante y al general progreso de ciencia y tecnología en América Latina.
4. Destruyes barreras sociales que impiden que estudiantes con pocos recursos tengan la oportunidad de internacionalizarse.
5. Satisfacción personal de saber que tú también eres agente del cambio y del progreso

Desde hoy hasta finales de Diciembre voy a estar recopilando y haciendo una base de datos de personas en diferentes países que comparten esta idea y quisieran ser parte del proyecto (contácteme si quiere ser un anfitrión). Dependiendo de cuanta acogida tenga, a mediados del 2016 podríamos comenzar con los primeros intercambios.

Esto recién se esta iniciando y estoy mas que feliz de recibir sugerencias y comentarios (por favor mandarlos a mi correo: clarissajaz@gmail.com). En el futuro, me gustaría que cada estudiante complemente su pasantía con un curso de equidad de género y otro curso en liderazgo y negocios como parte esencial del intercambio. En ese sentido me gustaria conectar con organizaciones que les gustaria apoyar al proyecto

La segunda parte del proyecto busca establecer una plataforma de «mentorship» (tutorías) donde diversos profesionales de varias partes del mundo donan una hora de su tiempo para ayudar/asesorar a un estudiante latino via Skype. Si están interesados por favor contactarme, sera una experiencia increíble y un boost para tu CV.

La tercera parte del proyecto busca el empoderamiento de mujeres. Para ellos estoy reclutando mentoras Ekpapalek que estarían dispuestas a donar 15 minutos de su tiempo para presentarse en una escuela nacional y contar sus experiencias a niñas y niños. Aún queda la parte de buscar financiamiento por los costos de viaje. Buscaremos juntos la forma de buscar auspiciadores y generar actividades que recauden fondos (maratones con causa, gofundme páginas, etc).

Ekpa’palek es una palabra de la lengua indígena Shiwilu de la Amazonía Peruana y significa ayudar a caminar a un infante. Este verbo se usa para referirse a la manera en la que se ayuda a caminar a los niños pequeños que estan empezando ha caminar, por ello el adulto debe desplazarse lentamente junto a él o ella. Muchos hemos aprendido a caminar asi pero en la lengua Shiwilu tenemos una palabra que describe esta acción.
