Dear Professor XXXX
First of all, let me send you my recognition and respect towards your research.
My name is XXXX and I am totally interested in your studies about sex determination, SRY function, Sox genes, X inactivation, dosage compensation, epigenetics mechanisms, complex role of transcriptions factors during development..(and I can keep on)…! I am personally fascinated by the process of sexual differentiation and the understanding of the specific underlying mechanisms.. I have read many of your articles hence I know you are one of the researchers with the largest experience on this topic (including of course your famous article from 1991).
My latest experience in developmental biology was during my master thesis project. I have had the opportunity to work in neuronal fate determination in the developing central nervous system at Johan Ericson’s laboratory at Karolinska Institutet University in Sweden. There I learnt many techniques such as in ovo electroporation, luciferase reporter assays, in-situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, cloning and confocal laser microscopy.
Prior to this, I had the opportunity to work in some labs in Finland and in Peru, hence I had the opportunity to show part of my research with posters at different symposiums and also to be part in 3 different publications. (please refer to my attached CV for publications and recommendations letters).
I contacted one of your former PhD students, XXXX, who happens to be a friend of my former supervisor. She encouraged me to pursue my interest in your research. She mentioned that your lab is very dynamic and that the lab » … will make you achieve more than you think you are capable of…».
Basic research is my passion, so please have no doubts that this PhD is something that I really would enjoy and love to do. Furthermore, In the future, I would like to continue researching in sex development, gender differences and how this sex development genes are expressed in differences in cognition and behaviour.
I would be grateful for the opportunity to present myself and discuss my interest in this PhD project with you. In case that is not possible at the moment, that is no problem, I can wait, as I am currently working in a pharmaceutical company while I wait for the perfect PhD project.
Kind regards and I look forward to hearing from you
XXXX
